Does this fixture mount directly on a round exterior weatherproof box? or will it need a larger backplate?

The mounting plate is designed to fit properly on a standard J-box, weatherproof or not. David.
Was this Answer Helpful ?Yes. That's how I have mine mounted, on a round box. The fixture comes with a foam seal and I placed a small amount of silicone around the outer edge after install.
Was this Answer Helpful ?Either way will work. We bought two and attached one flush to the eave where the existing power box was (replacing older dusk-to-dawn light). But we had to run wire from the existing power box to jump it to the new installation of the second light (about 12' away) so we used the plastic boxes for both in order to run the new conduit and wires. So either way works just fine! Good luck!
