I suppose that you could use another plate but you would lose the numbers that show how long the switch is "on".

Timer can be used in standard switch plate with a rectangular opening.

Designed to replace a standard light switch. The small round shaft of the timer extend through small rectangular hole in a standard switchplate. They supply a nice plate that is larger than the hole (much), with the minutes marked. It even is supplied in 2 colors (white and silver). They supply a nut to hold it all in place and a knob to set the time. As easy to replace as a standard light switch and looks professional when done.
