You can turn it counter-clockwise to the stop (zero position) without damaging the timer/switch mechanism which is the stop position.

Like the two previous correct answers, yes, it can be turned off by cranking it counterclockwise back to zero. While you're turning it backward there is a mild resistance but no ratcheting like it does when setting. After returning to zero (off / start) the appliance it's attached to (often a bathroom exhaust fan) should stop (turn off) but the timer will continue to run for a short period as the spring tension releases...usually less than 30 seconds.
