Should I use 6/3 or 8/3 wire? Also, we have a 50 amp circuit breaker, is that correct?


You can use the 50 amp breaker with 6-3 NM-B cable or a 40 amp breaker with 8-3 NM-B cable. Check your range installation instructions to see what amperage is recommended for your range, but most require a 40 amp circuit. You have selected the wrong receptacle though. Since 1996 the NEC has required a 4-wire circuit with a 4-wire receptacle and 4-wire/prong range cord and plug.
