You push the pins in or pull out based on how you want your lights to be on or off. You can do this by hand.

Be sure to set the time of day when you begin the process; then press down the appropriate buttons for when dusk begins and for four hours after that.

Make sure all the pins are in the up position. You will have to estimate the time of dusk for your area, for example 5:30pm. Push the pins down from 5:30pm through 9:30pm (4 hours). Make sure the white switch at the top is in the further most right position.

There is no setting for what you are trying to accomplish for this unit. It goes on and off at a particular time of day. Only thing you can do is determine your 'dusk' time of day and have it turn on then and off after 4 hours. Adjust as the time 'dusk' time changes.

Grey ribbed sliding switch near cover hinge has three positions. Center position is always off, Slide left for always on. Slide right for timer. The switch is shipped in the center, off position, in the box. That is probably your problem. Once timer switch selected, push grey wheel pins down starting at 5:00 PM. Each grey pin is 30 minutes. Once all 8 pins are depressed (9:00 PM), rotate dial to set current time. That should do it.

Push the pins down according to what time you want the timer to start. If you want the timer to start at 6 pm, push down the pins starting at 6 and for 4 hours after. Then rotate the outside disk to the present time and plug into outlet. Thee is a switch above the time that is a bypass feature. Make sure that it is set in the correct position.

The outer ring is a series of push down pins, one for each hour. Just push down the hours you want the lights to be on.

The term "countdown" doesn't really apply to this timer. Don't know why the call it that. You set the timer to the current time. You push down the pins that correspond to the time you want the timer activated. Can be set for multiple "on" times during the 24 hr. period.
