Yes, the #4 THHN will work as long as it is dual rated THHN/THWN and all 4 conductors are installed in conduit at least 18 inches deep. I would bump the breaker up to a 60 amp to be sure the wire will fit the lugs, it will be the same price as a 50 amp breaker.
