Typically most lighting circuits are 15 amp and use #14 AWG wire although some use 20 amp circuits with #12 AWG wire.

If the circuit breaker is 15 amps, 14 gauge wire can be used. For a 20 amp circuit breaker, 12 gauge wire is specified. A 30 amp circuit breaker requires 10 gauge wire. While you can always substitute a lower gauge wire, they are more expensive and difficult to work with.
