Does this padding have Bht in it?

BHT is an additive widely used to reduce the risk of oxidation. It can be found in many common household products such as furniture, shoe soles, plastic products, cardboard boxes, dry foods, carpet cushions and some types of carpets. Leggett & Platt does not use BHT in the manufacture of our carpet cushion products; however, some post -consumer materials used in the manufacturing of bonded cushion may contain small traces of BHT. This migration of BHT can occur when certain atmospheric conditions exist that change the normally colorless state of BHT to a yellow. The conditions that normally create a positive environment for a BHT reaction are moisture, low light, heat and a source of oxidation. The most common source of the oxidation is nitrogen oxide that comes from, for example, furnace exhausts or other heat sources, etc. This conversion to yellow condition also requires an alkaline environment and the reaction can be reversed readily by acidifying the stained areas. As long as the surface remains slight acid, the BHT will remain in its colorless state. But, washing with water or alkaline detergents will neutralize that state. These situations of yellowing in carpet will normally occur in basements or dark rooms with limited light, a damp condition and a more enclosed area with limited air circulation. The yellowing condition is odorless and is readily corrected by several remedies: • Cleaning the affected area with a mild detergent or acidic cleaner • Increasing air circulation and ventilation – opening windows • Increasing sunlight or light source This condition is not a fault of the cushion or the solution dyed Olefin carpets containing BHT that increases the life expectancy and maintenance of these products. It is rather a unique and temporary phenomenon that only occurs with certain atmospheric conditions and can be easily remedied by a change of these factors. Many times it goes away as quickly as it comes with a change in these factors. In summary, this yellowing discoloration problem cannot be attributed to carpet cushion produced by Leggett & Platt.
