Good question! We do not recommend leaving any primers, including Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer, exposed without a top coat. Primers are very porous and if not top coated can eventually lead to peeling, chipping, or chalking. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5
