do you need to use a primer?

Nope. It's not really paint - it's more like sand with a painty goo.

No primer needed. It is important to properly prepare your deck before applying, though. Power wash it to remove all mold and mildew, and remove any loose paint. Be sure all nails are pounded in. If you have any really deep gouges, fill with wood filler.

no, this product is so thick and putting it on as suggested, no need for primer.

No primer is required. However, your surface must be completely clean, to include removal of any flaking paint or stain. I used this on the front steps of our house which faces South. So far no problems in the past 6 months since I applied the coating. Also, I DID NOT use a roller, I used a brush which seems to work just fine.
