Can I hook a generator to this and then run the wire to my main circuit breaker in my home? Also would this power my whole house?

You can wire it direct but with a safety interlock feature that eliminates the main feed to your breaker panel and the generator feed being both open at the same time! The main feed switch needs to be closed before you can energize the generator to the breaker panel and vise versa.

There are 2 ways of doing this safely but you check your town/city code first. You can use a transfer switch as Gus stated. You can also use a Generator Interlock which is less expensive but still provides the safety you would need. The interlock switch is installed on the main panel. When you want to use the generator you switch the main breaker off (so that you can not back feed the line) and you switch the (usually 30 amp breaker on in the main panel). So, you have your generator and a 30amp cord running from your generator into the house main panel to a 30 amp breaker . This will allow you to run some of the things in your house, up to 7000 watts. Either way you should really consult an electrician.

NO! If you wire it into your main breaker, you will be backfeeding power into the grid and you could potentially kill a utility worker trying to restore power to the grid. And what happens when they restore power, and your generator is still running? Bye bye, generator. Wiring into the main breaker is dangerous and illegal. There are other ways to wire directly into your circuitry, but they all rely upon your ability to remember to flip the right breakers, and they also are dangerous and illegal. The only way to do this safely and legally is to install a transfer switch. The generator will be connected to this inlet plug (or directly to the transfer switch), then the transfer switch is wired to the circuits you want powered when the generator is running. The transfer switch will only allow one power source to operate each circuit at a time. The specifications for this plug indicate it is only rated for 7500W. Unless you have a very small house or very few electrical requirements, it will not be sufficient for your entire house.
