As long as you have enough play to slide the parts onto one of the two pipes being joined, you are good to go. Disassemble the unit: main body, two rubber bushings, two threaded rings. Slide a ring onto one pipe, followed by a rubber bushing. Push them far enough back to allow the body to slide on and out of the way of the second pipe. Put a ring and bushing on the second pipe. Center the body over the gap; slide the bushing and ring up to the body. Hand tighten the rings. Tweak tightness with a channel lock ONLY if it drips when under pressure. You MUST restrain the two pipes from being able to push apart. This coupling is not designed to keep that from happening.
