Opening is 3 1/2" deep and holder with back plate only 1 3/4". Do I need to add something to back wall for it to push against?


No, when you tighten the screws in the middle of the fixture, it tightens the backplate up against the back of your wall, and keeps the fixture in place nice and snug. Nothing else is needed.
