Needle-like tips pierce the wire insulation to make the connection. I used mine to make a extension cord for Christmas lights, but have used them all the time. Any time I'm walking away from a tool so it can't be knock off or someone using it by accident.

Points pierce the insulation, so easy. I use the two I bought all the time. Christmas lights are the first reason I made them. I made a extension cord with the switch on them.
