I will be laying laminate over existing vinyl floors. Do I still need the underlayment?

We laid a wood floor directly on our old vinyl surface and the vinyl acted as the insulator. Our Kitchen came out great.
Was this Answer Helpful ?Yes. The laminate may stick or squeak on the vinyl under it. The reason for the underlay is to equalize the down pressure and keeps the flooring quiet.
Was this Answer Helpful ?The underlayment serves several functions other than as a moisture barrier. Over an existing floor that provides a good seal against moisture, you eliminate that particular function. However, the underlayment also helps to provide a compensating pad to smooth any low or high spots in the floor and it provides a quieter walking floor by deadening the sound of foot impacts. The foam underlayment is so comparatively inexpensive that I would suggest using it even over a well sealed surface.
