can i also use this to operate a simple awning type window I have just put into a garden shed?


This operator is designed for casement windows whose hinges are mounted on the vertical left or right side of the window. It sounds like you've constructed an awning window which is hinged horizontally across the top of the window… suggest using an operator similar to these: H-3828, TH-23010 and TH-24097.
