No it would not effect anything, normally the lights will have the wires that its sized for,unless you're getting bigger wattage light bulbs or getting a higher wattage transformer you do not need to up size the wire.

Hello and Thank you for your question. 12 gauge wire is suggested for several different situations. 1) If you have a transformer that is 300watts or Larger. 2) If you plan to have a single run of low voltage cable that is longer than 200 feet long. With Long runs of Low Voltage cable you can experience voltage drop. Due to this 12 gauge cable is recommended to reduce voltage drop. If you plan to use the 75 feet of cable in the kit, and not add additional lengths of cable, then 16 gauge cable is sufficient.
