what size line do need to run to a gas range?

Most ranges, 1/2" would be fine, you can check the specific manufacturer specs, but most appliance hookups designed for ranges are actually 3/8" anyway, so 1/2" is more than enough. If you're going to install a 48' profession Viking or something, you may want to run 3/4". If you have access, you may as well run the 3/4", because you never know what you'll need in the future. If you use 1/2", there's a kit that includes all the fittings you'll need, including the appliance connector, at substantial savings over picking each pieces. And the trip back because you picked the wrong fitting on your own is a long one.

Depends on distance you are running. 3/4 is always a safe bet.
