I have five routers from three different manufactures they all use the same bits. The only difference that I am aware of is some are 1/4inch and some are 1/2inch shank. I would definitely recommend a router that has both collets. I use carbide bits as they last longer and stay sharper. I have bits from several makers also.

the porta cable router as well as almost all routers will use all brands of cutters. the main concern is if your router has a 1/2 in or 1/4 in collett. this will determine the shank size of the cutters you can use. the porta cable router comes with both size colletts

thats not quite how it works. every bit is made with a standard size shank. who made the bit vs who made the router has nothing to do with it. you can use any manufacturers bit with any manufacturers router.its the shank size vs the collet size you need to look at. if youre router has 1/4" collet you will only be able to use 1/4" shank bits. if your router only has a 1/2" collet you can use the 1/2" shank bits. if you can get a router that accepts both it will be a much more versitile tool. for light homeowner level use a 1/4" should be fine. if you plan to get more adventurous later on id suggest investing in a good quality tool that will handle both.
