After your bit is inserted & locked in the collet is it suppose to have a good 1/8 of an play when puling the bit back & forth, doesn't seem right?

The bit does not move side to side but a little front to back because not all bits are built for this tool but all tools using this method

Hello DonPaul! The bit could possible have a small bit of play moving in and out depending on the size of the notch for your impact bits. It will not harm the tool.

If you are referring to pulling the bit in and out the answer is no. I just checked two different kobalt drills and they both don't move in and out or up and down. There is a little play when you twist left and right. The kobalt drills are solid and well designed.
