How do you fix the Kohler slow close toilet seat when it stops closing slowly?

I am not sure how to actually fix it, but I do know it has to do with the gray plastic strip that encloses the hinges. Mine keeps popping off, but I have yet to devise a way to keep the plastic strip in place.
