Can disposals be used in combination with a septic tank? If so, would there be any models more suitable than others?

Yes, that's not a problem. In fact, I would think it's beneficial, since any food waste would be ground up. I think this one would work well as it's dual stage and they state the end result is a nearly liquefied output.
