Will the product work if there is only a single wire for the fan/light or does it require separate wires for fan and light control?

It should. Turn the electric power off to the fan. You hook up the fan and remote as listed in the instruction, then the remote black goes to house black and the fan white and remote white goes to the house white. That should allow power to both light and the fan and the remote will make each controlled separately. Turn power back on and sync the fan and remote, if needed. Just follow the instructions with the remote. If you are not sure this will work, please contact an electrician.
