I am sorry about your lighting issue. We definitely should have been able to give you more information while on our Technical Support line. The small component you are talking about sounds like the wattage limiter. This is a goverment regulated part that helps to maintain the correct wattage of the light bulbs. If this part fails, it can affect the light kit.
