You need to set it up initially via the app but once set up, it'll work (be controlled) with any direction thru your Mini, by saying, "Hey Google..(turn on lights, off lights, dim lights)"

Yes you can control the light by voice, but the mini needs to be near you to control it....If you are downstairs or in another room you need another mini installed in other areas of the house to get the light to come on in another room......

If you have the google assistant app, then thats all you need along with wifi. The google home app is where all your devices would be available for adjustments in settings, like a hub but not required to use the mini or bulb. The google assistant app talks to you and between devices to get stuff done like setting up the light bulb to come on or offto whatever you want.
