I have a musty smell in one area of my basement. Is this the right tool to help diagnose if there is an issue?

It would depend on the material you are testing. For drywall, wood, OSB, this would be the right tool. Concrete is a common material used in basements but unfortunately is considered a specialty material in moisture testing and requires a "Concrete moisture meter" which we unfortunately do not make.
