why does the filter only come in a 6 month filter? does that mean i will have to change the filter every 6 months at a cost of 42.00?

My refrigerator from 2007 uses this same replacement. A light comes on to tell us it's time to change the filter- ironically, it seems to come on about the same time every year. Also, we apparently have water that is considered to be on the "hard" side (vs. "soft" water). That being said, replacing the filter annually is sufficient.

If your water is not extremely hard it can last longer but it is best not to try to extend it too long. As soon as you notice a reduction in ice production you will want to change it.
