can it replace Nest Protect? Must there be a functional Nest Protect for this to work?


Hi Mike, the First Alert SC5 Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm is designed as a direct replacement for the 2nd generation Nest Protect. It fits the same mounting bracket and includes an adapter for the hardwired version, so no rewiring is needed. It can work seamlessly with existing Nest Protect detectors or on its own, so a functional Nest Protect is not required to install and use the First Alert SC5 in your home.

Yes, this is the Google-recommended replacement for the discontinued Nest Protect Smoke/C02 detectors (and currently as of 7/2025 the best replacement option if you want detectors similar to Nest Protect). These detectors can be used with or without any other Nest Protect Detectors. If you're using or want to use the Google Home App, and you want these detectors synced, you have to download the First Alert App then link the First Alert Detectors to the Google Home App (instructions are included; it's very easy to do on a smartphone).
