why is the detector beeping? i need to change the battery?


If you have had this for a while yes I would try the battery. If you just installed it, consider the wiring.

You did not mention whether your smoke detector is new or used. If you have had it for a while, then it is the battery. Typically they die after your have had a power outage and they have to power the detector. If it is new, I would suspect that it is miswired or defective. Please refer to the help sheet that came with the detector or call the manufacturer if the battery does not help.
