How many years does the smoke dector last before replacement is advised?

I just replaced one that I had installed when my house was being built in 1995. The rest of the ones I installed at that time are still working ok. I just test them once in a long while, maybe about once a year. The excellent advice is to change the battery each time you reset your clocks for daylight savings time (spring AND fall). At that time, when your at the unit anyway, you can test it with the old battery still installed, then again with the new battery installed. This won't take even one whole minute. If both tests are good that will give you a good idea that the unit is working. (Long answer, but most of mine are going on 20 years). Look into regulations before pitching them out. Some have a small radio-active component.

These alarms are supposed to be changed every 2 years if really old in age. The new we just got says every 10 years. Ours is the fire alarm and carbon Monoxide alarm and has a photo electric cell and battery back up.(9 volt battery).

According to USFA standard, smoke detectors should be replaced every 8 to 10 years and smoke detector batteries should be replaced at least once per year.
