how is this wireless if it is hardwired

I hate to see unanswered questions. Don't know if you still need the answer but here goes. The hardwire is used to power the individual unit along with the battery back up in case the power goes out. The wireless portion allows for interconnection between smoke and/or carbon monoxide detectors without having to have a separate wire between each detector. if one goes off they all go off.
