Will this light work using a regular wall switch or is the control through the app necessary to simply turning the light off or on?

It CAN work with a regular wall switch, but you'd need to replace the light fixture your switch controls with a recepticle. The you plug this light into that recepticle. Lowe's doesn't seem to carry the item you'd need but search for Leviton 5042 15 Amp, 125 Volt, Duplex Receptacle On 4-Inch Cover. Your switch will now control power to this outlet. Anything you plug into the outlet will then be turned on and off by the switch.
