it has 3 connectors,so you can use your 10/3 and just leave off 1 wire

You'd have to cut off the extra wire. There are connections only for hot-black, neutral-white, and ground-green, just like a "normal" 120VAC circuit. Cut it short, so somebody doesn't get the idea to "connect" the unconnected lead, and create a 240 VAC issue.
