I removed the cap. It was not attached to the filter. How can i remove the filter?


Answering my own question: if the cap comes off without the filter, use a plastic/rubber jar opener. It allows a good grip on the filter. Gently turn counterclockwise and the filter will be easy to remove. To reinstall, screw the cap onto the new filter. Then place in the housing and turn clockwise.
