Is a pad necessary?

Hi Barb A pad is not necessarily "needed"... However, we do strongly recommend using one to prevent the rug from slipping (more so for indoor use, but depending on surface type). Additionally it really helps to protect the rug and maintain both "good sides", as it is reversible... Also, if used outdoors the pad keeps the rug directly off of the surface and allows air to pass thru, helping it to dry. To be honest... there is no need to buy an expensive pad, just any inexpensive non-slip or outdoor pad will be just as effective as other pads claiming to have all these additional qualities :) I hope this was helpful!
