Does this have to be installed in the center of the tub, or can it be moved closer to one end?

The unit can be installed closer to one end/off-centered, as long as you are not going into where the bathtub starts to curve. Many users prefer to have it installed not directly in the center of the tub to accommodate commodes or other bathroom features.
