It can, but I advise against it. I suggest if you do put it outside in the middle of winter, put it in a shed like structure of some kind. The last thing you want is rust developing on the generator over a period of time.

Treat the storage of the generator the same as you would a vehicle. Generators are designed to be run outside or at least in a semi enclosed, well ventalated area. It would be better if it were stored under cover(so would a car). Security might be a bigger issue, people steal unsecured, visible generators all the time.

This unit should not be left out in the weather. If used in inclamate weather something should be used to shield if from rain and snow. Be sure that the protection does not create any sort of fire hazard.
