so, which is it that now builds the Craftsman's, Black & Decker? MTD? MTD by another? Someone else?

To my knowledge it's MTD now. I've been researching and this one seems very similar to the Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro. T240 has better turn radius (5 degree vs 16) and a metal hood plus includes a front bumper. XT1 has LED headlights. The Cadet has a new transmission (TL200 I think it's called) that's even weaker than the K46 the T240 has. I'm leaning towards the T240.
