with no alternator how does battery stay charged

It has a charging system.. It's not part of the magneto or ignition system. If you run the unit at full engine RPM's it keeps the battery charged just fine. Most people wont run their engines at full RPM and then you run into issues. The small AGM batteries arent the best either.

There is an altenator. It is under the engine flywheel. Look up "How to replace the altenator on a Briggs & Stratton mower engine."

It’s called a magneto

Most mowers with an electric start have extra coil integrated into the ignition coil. This is a trickle charger. It puts out enough to keep the battery topped off. It WILL NOT recharge a dead battery So, charge your battery at the beginning of the season. Unless you have problem staring it and run the battery down, charging it once a year should be fine . By the way, I'm a former Sears Lawn and Garden technician

You have to recharge the battery periodically. I have riders for many years and none of them ever had an alternator, or even a generator. All I've ever had to do is to charge up the battery at the beginning of the season and they often last long enough to make it through the summer and into the fall (my property is about 1 acre and it takes a couple of hours to cut the entire lawn). Two things that will help save the charge on your battery is to flip the seat up when not in use. Sometimes that lock-out switch under the seat is a bit sensitive and can put a light drain on the battery. Flipping the seat up when not in use will eliminate that problem. During the off-season, disconnect the negative cable and make sure it rests no where close to the negative terminal. This will ensure that any parasitic losses that may exist will not occur. It makes charge up at the beginning of the season a quicker event, so you can get the lawn mowed sooner.

My R110 has a build date of April 2019. I put a volt meter on it at three quarters speed it was reading 13.8 volts. That ought to be enough to keep it charged during the season.
