i have a hole in the wall cant i just cut a piece of sheetrock and just cover it with tape and joint compond ?


That depends on the size of the hole and if it's worth this approach. If the hole is larger than 6" these patches are not ideal.to replace with a piece of drywall, you can cut the hole larger in order expose at least two studs, one on each side of the hole, in order to have something to screw the drywall to, but only cut it back to expose half of the stud vertically.typically studs are about 16" apart
