Power auger- can it drill thru asphalt driveway?


Sorry, no. You would need to break up the asphalt first where you need to dig. Unless the asphalt is really soft, there is no chance it will cut into it. My recommendation is to get an electric hammer drill with a chisel bit to cut out the areas you plan to put the posts into. Then use the auger.

This cannot drill through asphalt.

No chance. It might start digging in but the clutch will engage long before you get through an inch of pavement. Go rent a 60 pound breaker ( jack hammer) from a tool rental supply company to get through the asphalt since you have probably 12 or 13 holes. Then go down with the auger after you are through the asphalt and the base rock.
