What is the maximum depth of hole it can make? how long is the bit?

Hi, 3 foot is the standard length for auger bits. 36 to 38 inches is considered standard.

A 20 inch deep hole is about all it will do.

Theoretically you could make a hole about 36 inches deep. However in real life I would say if you want to do holes at greater then 20 to 24 inches you should get a bigger device. Even in good digging soil (which mine is not) this tool will bog down or the clutch will kick in at depths greater then about 2 feet. Then there is the matter of lifting it time after time. If you want to do a bunch of serious post holes go a lot bigger. Rent something serious. I bought mine for digging holes for 1 gallon plants and the occasional 5 gallon plant. For that task it is adequate.
