Priming is generally only necessary if the original paint film has weathered to the point of having the bare wood showing, Surface preparation is the key element in the success of exterior painting. The most common failure of applying new paint is painting over an existing surface that is not prepared properly. Rub your hand over the existing surface and see if the surface is "chalky" . If it is, pressure wash the surface to remove the chalk prior to the application of the new finish.
