If the post is not painted and not pressure treated, use at least one coat of exterior primer and at least two coats of oil base or latex. Oil base is used when subject to more wear and tear or constant use. Use latex if it just sits in the ground,( longer life yet less durable). If painted recoat with same kind of paint. If pressure treated ,let age til dry and/or use a paint additive like Seasonite by Flood Co. and follow instructions on label.
