this is 1 coat--is it problematic to add a 2nd coat? also can or should I apply a transparent water protector?


Thank you for taking the time to ask a question. You should only apply 1 coat of Semi-Transparent stain (overapplication can lead to peeling) and should not apply anything else over it.
