Can you paint over latex paint with the oil based paint without sanding first?


Yes, you will need to prepare the latex-painted surface by sanding before applying your oil based paint.

Coating a latex based product with new oil based paint may result in poor appearances on your surface. While you can coat your oil based paint with a latex based one it is not recommended to apply oil based products over latex based one. This combination may result in poor adhesion and separation of the product.

I used Valspar Ultimate paint and primer and did not need to strip or sand. You might want to sand slightly before painting if there are bumps in your finish.
