Nice Column...
The existing column in our house was made of wood and over 35 years old. It had gashes from being run into over time and just looked bad. Plus, it wasn't installed correctly, it had a very slight tilt to one side. It needed to be replaced. My wife and I looked at fibreglass columns in Home Depot and Lowes. The cost was exactly the same ($119.00) and the dimensions were also very close. I can honestly tell you the columns at Lowes were of a much better quality. Those at Home Depot looked like th...
Great Column
I wanted to leave a review for the "not so handy" do-it-yourselfers. I identify with this group and usually default to the pro's or friends for most home maintenance. I needed to replace one of the six columns on my front porch and decided to take this project on myself. Having never done anything like this, I watched a bunch of youtube videos and gathered my materials which included this column and the $43 cap/base kit. I would highly recommend the kit, the column will look much better with it....
I'm Glad I Thought To Do This!
For whatever reason, the builder of my home put in a wall with a cut-out, between the kitchen and family rooms... it looked hideous. Once it was confirmed that it wasn't load-bearing, I couldn't wait to have it knocked down. After the wall was removed, I later wanted to have something in place that would separate the two rooms, while still allowing "openness." After googling "kitchen and family room separators," I came across examples using columns, and it was an instant decision. I ordered ...
Quit worrying about rot
I recently bought a house with 12 columns ranging from 8' to 10' in height. 50% are in need of repair and in almost all cases there is rot at the bottom. Some have broken apart at the seams from the top to the bottom. These new columns were not only easy with which to work, but also will never rot. They are stronger than the wood columns as well. I am very happy to find these. They actually are very heavy so take a friend when purchasing. The product puts you in the mind of a cement type of mate...
Just an OK column
I've installed commercial fiberglass columns bought from local lumber yards and prefer them over these. These columns are alot lighter than most fiberglass columns and because of that they are brittle. I was not at all impressed with the factory edges on the top or bottom. Even after sanding with a belt sander to smooth them out they are still cut/formed not square. All the columns had pinholes that had to be filled. Over a 100 each! They were sloppy around the top where it flares out and it nee...
Good value for Porch Support columns
I purchased from the lowes web site and found where they were stocked very quickly. (White Marsh) They advised the pick up could be made that day but due to scheduling I loaded them up in my F150 the following day. It took about 25 minutes for Lowes to get the merchandise to the check out counter which went quickly. The only bad note here is before I left the store I made sure the number count was correct but as I unloaded them at home found one of the columns had been cracked and had a hole abo...
Too expensive. Well painted 6x6 wood posts better
We bought 3 of them and it was a work from the time we bought it from Lowe's store. People weren't willing to help to load it into our vehicle at Lowe's. One guy told us to wait while he finds someone to help us out, he didn't return back nor did anyone showed up. The column itself was not easy to work with. The edges were not smooth and chips came off from both sides of edges. Over all not so happy with the product and the service.
Cutting down length of fiberglass columns
Beware you may want to cut off the bottom of the column so the moulding near the top remains a uniform distance from the soffit. If the length of your old columns was.not uniform, you may need to cut off both ends a bit. Before you cut off too much from the top , be sure you have enough space to slide the cap down without bumping into the upper moulding so you can screw the cap bracket to the soffit.
Thanks so much for the feedback. Yes, always trim the column from the bottom due to the fact that the column is tapered the cap may not fit the top i...

OK, but have to paint every other year
Be prepared to paint often. The surface just doesn't hold paint very well. I've had these columns for 15 - 20 years and no matter how well I prep the surface, I end up have to paint every few years and forget the caps holding paint. They are made out of slick plastic and even if you sand them rough they never hold paint. It would be nice if the columns were a true white instead of the off-white color.
Fiberglass column
I ‘m no Bob Vila...perhaps more of a Tim “Tooltime” Allen. Anyway, I had a little trepidation about jacking up my porch roof and replacing a rotting wooden column with this fiberglass one. I just followed the provided instructions and found the material easy to work with. This “self critical” individual more than pleased with the final results Just two caveats...the column is a little heavy...and handle ends with care to avoid cracking.
