It is impossible to overstate the uniqueness of this plum. Its intense sweetness and scarcity has made it the truffle of plums. An all time favorite, Green Gage or Reine Claude is a small European plum tree with a low canopy clothed in elliptic, finely serrated, bright green leaves. In mid spring, it bursts into a profusion of sweetly fragrant, white 5-petaled blossoms, creating a spectacular display. They are followed in mid to late summer by a heavy crop of small to medium, oval, freestone, yellowish green plums with an amber flesh. Juicy, sweet and delicious, the plums have a very rich flavor and are perfect for eating right off the tree. The Green Gage is a very popular old fashioned English plum that grows well over a wide range of climates. Though self-fertile the Green Gage plum yields more heavily when pollinated with another cultivar. The tree requires 300-400 chill hours and typically grows up to 15-20 ft. tall and wide. It is hardy in USDA Zones 5-8 and is shipped in a #1 pot with a minimum height of 12 inches.
