1. Repairing vs. Hanging New Drywall

Drywall repair: Choose a lightweight or patching compound because they’re easier to spread and sand for small holes and dents. Learn more about drywall repairs.

New drywall: Use a powder compound or an all-purpose premixed compound for embedding tape and first coats. Follow with a lightweight finishing compound to reduce sanding effort. Learn how to clean after the drywall dust.

2. Premixed vs. Powder Compound

Powder compounds require mixing but are preferable for larger jobs, deep fills, or when you need faster hardening due to humid weather or tight project deadlines.

Premixed compounds work for most jobs and are easier to handle. Choose an all-purpose variant for taping, filling and finishing. Finish with lightweight compound for easier sanding. Learn about taping and mudding techniques.

3. Estimated Time

Powder compounds vary by set time - the time before they begin to harden and the next coat can be added.

Up to 20 minutes: Best for small jobs
45 to 90 minutes: Better for big areas, multiple seams and beginner-friendly work

Premixed compounds typically require 24–48 hours to dry before the next coat.

ProForm All Purpose Joint Compound is a vinyl base ready mix joint compound for the professional that may be used directly from the container. All Purpose Joint Compound is designed for tape application, fastener spotting, and complete joint finishing of gypsum board. It can also be used to repair cracks in plastered walls, to texture surfaces, and to laminate gypsum board to other surfaces such as masonry or other gypsum board. It contains enough binder to secure the reinforcing tape and develops its strength and hardness by drying.

I've done drywall repairs for over 30 years. I've used the Proform brand before and had no problems. I recently purchased more and something has to be different with the formula. Had several air bubbles some the size of a dime that left holes. Sanded, cleaned and mudded over the holes and the mud doesn't bond well to itself when sanding the mud doesn't fill in the holes and leaves a divit that has to be mudded again. I had to mud over one spot at least 4 times delaying the completion of a bathr...
