My recommendation for someone’s first leatherman

Made in USA good quality and great warranty. Classic design and not too heavy at all carrying it in the pocket every day. Locking tools are a must. Does come stiff out of the box. Needs to be used for a few weeks before it loosens up smooth.

Very stiff out of the box

This piece was very stiff when first opened up - to the point of thinking it would be returned without being able to open it fully. While now easier to open after almost a week, it will need quite a few more hours of oiling and opening and closing to fully loosen up as it takes a lot of effort still to close. It is priced higher than the standard Rebar online but it does come with a leather sheath which I think makes it old stock from my local store.
